For many, Black Friday is a day to save money with great deals. Especially in this time when everything is becoming more expensive, this day seems like the perfect day to buy Christmas gifts. Today, crowds gather at the store doors in search of big discounts. This kind-hearted woman also decided to buy a gift for her grandson. But this happy day turned into the worst day of her life...
With her kind eyes, caring soul, and warm heart, Ruth was the perfect grandmother to her grandson. They celebrated Grandparents Day every Wednesday and would sleep together, where they would encourage her grandson even more. Ruth felt like the luckiest woman in the world. Until things changed, her husband had always had poor health, but one day he became very sick and passed away.
The woman felt devastated, as if someone had taken a part of herself away. She couldn't eat anymore and began to lose weight rapidly. She was getting worse with each passing day. But just when she thought she couldn't bear it any longer, something changed... She had always told everyone that her grandson was like a ray of sunshine. When what happened next occurred, her heart broke.
One morning her daughter, son-in-law, and grandson arrived at her house. At first, she thought they were paying her a casual visit, but then they gave her the terrible news.
Ruth's son-in-law had a new job in a city over 300 kilometers away. The whole family had to move, including her beloved grandson. From then on, she spent most of her time alone. Although she tried to maintain a positive attitude, some days were difficult. But one day, the doorbell rang, and when she opened it, she couldn't believe what she saw.
As soon as Ruth opened the door, her eyes lit up. Standing at the door was her grandson Dave with a big smile. In his hands, he held the most adorable creature she had ever seen: he had bought her a dog. It was a gift so she wouldn't feel lonely when he wasn't around.
After that moment, Ruth felt happy again and took the dog everywhere with her. She wanted to do something for Dave, but she had nothing to give him because she had run out of money after her husband's death.
Ruth started saving her pennies because she suddenly had a brilliant idea to thank her grandson with the most beautiful gift on Christmas. While shopping at the supermarket, she overheard a conversation about Black Friday sales. Since Ruth didn't have much money, she decided to shop on Black Friday. That way, she could finally afford the great gift her grandson deserved.
During their last visit, Dave had told her that he was saving up to buy a PlayStation. All his friends already had consoles, and Dave was eager to join them. So she wanted to surprise him by giving him this console on Christmas Eve.
Finally, the fourth Friday of November arrived. Ruth woke up early to be the first in line at the store. She was excited and thought about her grandson's reaction when he saw the gift.
The woman had brought her dog, Happy. After all, he was the reason she had started all of this.
When they arrived at the store, Ruth was surprised by what she saw.
There was a long line of people in front of her. She joined the back of the line.
The first 30 minutes in line went well, but Ruth started to feel sore. Of course, she was no longer a young girl, so her body had some physical imperfections.
Ruth asked the woman behind her to watch her dog while she went to the bathroom.
But appearances can be deceiving because, unfortunately for Ruth, her faith in humanity turned out to be too good...
When Ruth returned to her place in line, she could no longer find the woman.
Finally, just as she was about to have a panic attack, she saw her... As Ruth approached the woman, something strange happened. The woman didn't look at her and pretended to be busy with her phone.
That's when Ruth gave up and decided to grab her dog and return to the line. As she was looking for Happy, she asked the woman to give her dog back. But in response, the woman said things that Ruth wouldn't even wish upon her worst enemy.
"I don't know where your stupid dog is!" the woman growled even more irritated. And when Ruth looked down, Happy was nowhere to be found.
A small tear rolled down her cheek at the thought of losing him.
But Ruth didn't give up and kept shouting until suddenly she heard a soft bark.
Hidden among the crowd, he looked scared and vulnerable.
Taking Happy into her arms, she ran through the crowd and cried with relief. She put Happy back on the ground and walked with him towards the street. But then Happy did something she couldn't believe.
The dog looked at her with his precious puppy eyes and pulled on the leash. Ruth still couldn't believe he wanted to do that and tried to pull away again. But Happy pulled on it again. Now Ruth was sure that Happy was trying to tell her not to give up and to keep going, Ruth thought, and she returned to the line. But this time, she decided she wouldn't abandon the line or her dog Happy, no matter what it cost her.
After several exhausting hours of waiting in line, the moment finally arrived. Ruth stood in front of the sliding doors of the store, ready to enter. The crowd rushed inside as soon as the doors opened like an avalanche.
People started pushing and Ruth began to feel panic. She decided to pick up Happy and paused for a moment to crouch down. But people were too impatient and started pushing her. And then something terrible happened...
It all happened in an instant, and Ruth couldn't do anything to prevent it.
She fell. But instead of feeling great pain, she immediately thought of the dog: Where is he?
Finally, Ruth saw his little body running towards her, and Happy licked her face. She decided to lift him into the air. Her arms were weak, but she would do everything possible to protect her favorite dog. Meanwhile, she tried to get up, but it was impossible because she no longer had any strength. She screamed for help, but the crowd didn't hear her, nor did they want to hear her. They kept walking, and some even stepped on her.
Ruth's heart began to beat faster, and she could no longer control her breathing.
Suddenly, she woke up in an unfamiliar room with a sharp pain in her head. She tried to move, but her whole body hurt. Ruth looked around, but she didn't recognize anything. Worst of all, she didn't see Happy by her side.
Then, from the back of the room, a man approached her.
"You probably don't recognize me because you fainted as soon as we brought your dog, but my name is Kevin," he said, looking at her with concern.
Then he explained the whole story to her. He told her that he was the store manager and they had seen her fall through the cameras. They also told her that they wanted to rescue her, but the crowd was too big.
Ruth looked at the man confused. He took her hands and repeated, "Your dog is fine, ma'am; we've been taking good care of her since she fell, and we'll bring her to you soon. We would also like to give something to you and your sweet little dog," he said as he handed her a large box full of gifts and toys for her dog. Then the man asked her why a woman of her age would come to the store on Black Friday.
Ruth told him the whole story about her relationship with her grandson, the move, the dog he had given her, and how she wanted to buy him a PlayStation. The man was touched by her story and soon returned with a huge bag. By his side, Ruth saw Happy walking next to him.
When the seller opened the bag and showed her what it contained, Ruth couldn't believe it.
As Ruth looked inside the bag, she couldn't believe that the store was giving her such expensive items. In the bag, there was a new Playstation console, some Playstation games, and, best of all," said Kevin, "we want to give you this tablet so you can video call your grandson whenever you want."
A few minutes later, they were in the car heading to Ruth's house. When they got out of the vehicle, Ruth had to promise Kevin that she would call him whenever she needed something or felt lonely. And she did.
A few days after the incident, Ruth called Kevin again to thank him for the iPad because she was already using it to make video calls with her grandson. Kevin proposed going on an outing with him and his grandfather. Ruth hesitated at first, but at Kevin's insistence, she accepted. And you know what? Kevin wasn't a bad guy at all! From that moment on, Ruth's life was filled with joy once again.
As soon as Ruth met Kevin's grandfather, they hit it off. His name was Harold, and he was adorable. He was kind, funny, and, most importantly, he loved dogs! So it was no surprise that Ruth quickly liked him, and vice versa. After that outing, they continued their weekly walks together, but this time without Kevin.
Finally, the moment she had been waiting for arrived. Christmas morning came, and Dave was able to open his gift.
When Dave tore the wrapping paper and saw what was inside, he looked at Ruth puzzled. Then, a small tear ran down his cheek, and with a smile, he ran towards his grandmother to hug her as tightly as he had never hugged her before. Ruth recalled her Black Friday shopping experience and felt like a true winner.
