Semi-truck fire on I-75 blocks lanes in Alachua County

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A semi-truck fire on Interstate 75 caused major traffic disruptions in Alachua County on Monday afternoon, forcing the closure of all southbound lanes near Paynes Prairie and backing up holiday weekend traffic for miles.

The incident, which occurred on the afternoon of Monday, May 26, 2025, saw the tractor-trailer engulfed in flames, sending thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky. Alachua County Fire Rescue and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene to combat the blaze and manage the escalating traffic situation.

To ensure the safety of emergency crews and the public, authorities took immediate action to close all southbound lanes of I-75 in the vicinity of the fire. In a ripple effect, the entrance ramps to I-75 southbound at both Williston Road and Archer Road were also shut down, preventing further vehicles from entering the already congested interstate.

Motorists traveling south were brought to a standstill, with many taking to social media to share images and videos of the fiery scene and the extensive gridlock. The timing of the incident, on a day when many were likely returning from Memorial Day weekend activities, exacerbated the travel headaches.

Details regarding the cause of the fire have not yet been released by officials. It also remains unclear what type of cargo the semi-truck was transporting at the time of the incident. There has been no official confirmation of any injuries sustained by the truck driver or any other individuals involved.

The same day, emergency services in Alachua County were also contending with a significant brush fire in a different part of the county, a factor that may have stretched local resources.

As of late afternoon, emergency crews were still on the scene, and it was not immediately clear when the southbound lanes of I-75 would be reopened to traffic. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes and expect significant delays.

This is a developing story. More information will be provided as it becomes available from the Florida Highway Patrol and Alachua County officials.
