Lincoln County School District employee convicted of raping student at high school

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. – A former health services advocate for the Lincoln County School District has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being convicted of raping a student at Taft High School. Angela Schafer, 53, was sentenced Tuesday in a case that officials say represents a significant breach of trust.

Schafer will also be required to register as a sex offender, pay an $8,500 fine, and complete an alcohol and drug treatment program.

The conviction stems from an investigation that began in early 2024 following allegations of an inappropriate relationship between Schafer and a male student. The Lincoln City Police Department’s investigation revealed that Schafer had engaged in sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 16. She was also charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor.

A grand jury indicted Schafer in November 2024, at which point she pleaded not guilty.

During the sentencing hearing, the prosecution argued for a prison sentence, highlighting the vulnerability of the victim and Schafer’s position of authority. “You used your position, the access you had to this child, and his vulnerability to sexually abuse him — the aggravating factors are significant,” stated Judge Sheryl Bachart during the proceedings.

The defense had argued for a probationary sentence, citing Schafer’s lack of a prior criminal history and the availability of community-based treatment options. However, the court ultimately sided with the prosecution’s request for incarceration.

“You never know who is capable of doing this; it can be anybody,” Judge Bachart remarked, underscoring the gravity of the offense and the abuse of a trusted role within the school community.

According to the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office, Schafer was employed by the school district in 2022 when the abuse occurred. District Attorney Jenna Wallace advocated for the 18-month prison sentence that was ultimately handed down.

The Lincoln County School District has not yet released a formal statement regarding the sentencing.
