LAPD sergeant among 2 killed in crash on 405 Fwy through Sepulveda Pass; all SB lanes closed
LAPD Sergeant and Civilian Killed in Tragic Pile-Up on 405 Freeway; All Southbound Lanes Shut Down for Hours
LOS ANGELES – A grim morning unfolded on the 405 Freeway Monday as a multi-vehicle crash in the Sepulveda Pass claimed the lives of a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant and a civilian, leaving the city’s major artery closed for hours and commuters snarled in miles-long gridlock.
The tragic chain of events began around 2 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the freeway near the Getty Center Drive and Sunset Boulevard exits in Brentwood. According to initial reports from the California Highway Patrol, the LAPD sergeant had stopped to render aid at the scene of a prior collision.
It was during this act of assistance that another vehicle plowed into the scene, striking the sergeant’s patrol car. The impact was catastrophic.
Emergency crews rushed to the chaotic scene, where debris from at least four vehicles was strewn across the freeway. Paramedics transported the gravely injured sergeant to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, but he tragically succumbed to his injuries. A civilian involved in the collisions was pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of both the sergeant and the other deceased individual have not yet been officially released, pending notification of their families.
A third person was also transported to a local hospital with unspecified injuries. Their condition is currently unknown.
The incident prompted a full closure of all southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway through the notoriously congested Sepulveda Pass. The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert, diverting all southbound traffic off the freeway and onto already strained surface streets. The closure remained in effect for most of the morning commute, causing a massive backup that stretched for miles and had a ripple effect across the city’s freeway system. Northbound lanes were also temporarily closed to allow for emergency vehicle access but have since reopened.
Images from the scene showed a mangled silver pickup truck and other severely damaged vehicles, a testament to the violence of the impact. The LAPD patrol car sustained significant damage.
The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the complex crash. It is not yet clear what caused the initial accident or the subsequent fatal collision. Investigators were on the scene for hours, meticulously documenting the evidence and working to reconstruct the sequence of events.
The death of the sergeant has sent shockwaves through the Los Angeles Police Department. While an official statement with the sergeant’s name and service record is pending, the loss of an officer in the line of duty is a profound blow to the department and the community they serve. Tributes and condolences are expected to pour in as the news of the tragedy spreads.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the California Highway Patrol’s West Los Angeles office. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on understanding how this tragic incident occurred and mourning the lives lost on one of Los Angeles’s busiest freeways.
