LEMONT, Ill., June 22, 2025 – A devastating three-vehicle collision in the early hours of Sunday morning has left two people dead and another hospitalized, according to the Illinois State Police. The crash, which occurred on the northbound lanes of Interstate 55 south of Lemont Road in DuPage County, has prompted a full closure of the highway, causing significant traffic diversions that are expected to last for several hours.

The incident took place at approximately 3:30 a.m. when state troopers responded to reports of a multi-vehicle accident. Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered a grim scene involving three vehicles. Two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. A third person was transported to a local hospital with injuries of an unspecified severity.

As of late Sunday morning, all northbound traffic on I-55 is being diverted onto the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355). The ramps from I-355 to northbound I-55 are also closed to traffic. Motorists are being strongly advised to seek alternative routes and to expect significant delays in the area.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

The cause of the crash remains under active investigation by the Illinois State Police. Further details about the circumstances leading to the collision have not been made public.
