LOS ANGELES – Chandler Jones, a former wide receiver who graced the fields of the NFL and the Canadian Football League after a record-setting collegiate career at San José State, was killed in a freeway crash in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 22, 2025. He was 33.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that Jones died at the scene from blunt traumatic injuries. According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred in the early morning hours on the eastbound Marina Freeway (State Route 90). Jones’ vehicle was struck by another car.

A standout wide receiver at San José State from 2010 to 2013, Jones left an indelible mark on the program’s record books. He remains the Spartans’ all-time leader in both receptions with 248 and touchdown catches with 31. His exceptional senior year in 2013 saw him haul in 79 passes for 1,356 yards and 15 touchdowns, earning him first-team All-Mountain West honors.

“Forever in our hearts, #89,” the San José State Football team posted on social media in a tribute to their former star. “In loving memory of Spartan wide receiver and coach, Chandler Jones.”

Following his illustrious collegiate career, Jones pursued his professional dream. He was a member of the practice squads for several NFL teams in 2014, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts, and Cleveland Browns.

His journey then took him to the Canadian Football League, where he played for the Montreal Alouettes. The team released a statement mourning his loss: “Our thoughts are with Chandler’s family and loved ones as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. We extend our heartfelt condolences and offer them our full support.”

After his playing days, Jones transitioned to coaching, sharing his knowledge and passion for the game with the next generation of players. He served as a coach at his alma mater, San José State, and also had a coaching stint with the Alouettes.

Before his rise in college and professional football, Jones was a celebrated athlete at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California. The school also paid tribute to their former student, highlighting his lasting legacy.

The sudden and tragic death of Chandler Jones has sent ripples of grief through the football community, with former teammates, coaches, and fans taking to social media to express their condolences and share memories of a talented player and respected mentor.
