Body of Missing 17-Year-Old Recovered in Lake Winnipesaukee After Extensive Search

GILFORD, N.H. – The body of a 17-year-old male who went missing in Lake Winnipesaukee on Friday afternoon was recovered late Friday evening, according to New Hampshire State Police. The tragic conclusion followed a multi-agency search effort in the area known as the “Broads.”

The incident began at approximately 12:48 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, when the NHSP Marine Patrol received a 911 call reporting that a person had entered the water from a boat and had not resurfaced. The location of the incident was specified as being near Diamond and Rattlesnake Islands.

Upon their arrival, Marine Patrol officers found a boat with three female occupants. They reported that the 17-year-old male had entered the water in an attempt to retrieve a bag that had fallen overboard. Strong winds had created rough water conditions, and the teen appeared to struggle before submerging and disappearing from view.

An immediate and extensive search was launched, involving members of the NHSP Marine Patrol, the Gilford Fire Department, and the Alton Fire Department. As the search continued into the evening, the New Hampshire Fish & Game Dive Unit was called in to assist.

At 7:02 p.m., the dive team located and recovered the teenager’s body.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim, pending notification of family. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the official cause of death, though initial investigations indicate drowning.

The New Hampshire State Police are continuing to investigate all aspects of the incident. They have asked that anyone with additional information contact Sgt. Seth Alie of the Marine Patrol at Seth.P.Alie@dos.nh.gov or by calling 603-227-2117.
