Bowling coach shot and killed 17-year-old girl he taught before killing himself, sheriff says

BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A tight-knit community is in mourning after a beloved 17-year-old Bedford High School student was shot and killed by her bowling coach in a shocking murder-suicide that has left family, friends, and law enforcement grappling for answers.

The tragedy unfolded on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at the victim’s home on West Sterns Road. Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough identified the deceased as Gwendolyn Faye Smith, a recent graduate, and Ryan Jacob Leist, 33, who served as a volunteer bowling coach for the high school team.

According to Sheriff Goodnough, Smith’s stepfather discovered the two bodies, both with apparent gunshot wounds. Investigators have determined that Leist shot Smith multiple times before turning the gun on himself.

“This is a tragic and unnecessary loss that has shaken our entire Bedford community,” said a visibly emotional Sheriff Goodnough during a press conference. “Our hearts and prayers go out to Gwen’s family and the many friends whose lives she touched so deeply.”

While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have confirmed that Smith and Leist knew each other through the school’s bowling program. Leist was not a direct employee of the school district but was affiliated with the team through his employment at a local bowling alley. He had reportedly resigned from his position at the alley shortly before the incident.

The nature of their relationship remains a key focus of the investigation. Sheriff Goodnough stated that while there is no current evidence of a romantic relationship, detectives are reviewing communications between Smith and Leist.

Gwendolyn Smith, who had just graduated, was remembered by friends and school officials as a vibrant and kind-hearted individual with a passion for art and music. Bedford Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Carl Shultz described her as a “remarkable young lady” and said the district has activated its crisis response team to support students and staff.

“Gwen will be remembered for her kindness, her bright spirit, and the joy she brought to those around her,” the school district said in a statement.

The shocking news has sent ripples of grief and disbelief through the community. A GoFundMe page has been established to support Smith’s family, and a celebration of her life is being planned. Neighbors and friends have expressed their sorrow and confusion over the senseless act of violence.

“It’s just devastating,” said one neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “You never think something like this could happen here. Our hearts are broken for her family.”

Sheriff Goodnough urged the community to come together and support one another during this difficult time. He also emphasized that the investigation is active and that more details will be released as they become available.
