1 dead after possible boating accident in Horry County, SCDNR says

One Person Dead Following Boating Incident on Intracoastal Waterway in Horry County

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) has confirmed that one person has died following a possible boating accident on the Intracoastal Waterway in Horry County.

Details are limited at this time, but SCDNR officials stated that they were notified of the incident late Monday evening. Agency spokesperson, Officer John Smith, confirmed the fatality and stated that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is underway.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Horry County Coroner’s Office.

The incident is reported to have occurred in the vicinity of the Socastee Swing Bridge. SCDNR law enforcement, alongside crews from Horry County Fire Rescue and the Horry County Police Department, responded to the scene.

As of late Monday night, it was not immediately clear what led to the incident or if other individuals were involved or injured. The type of vessel or vessels involved has not yet been released.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” Officer Smith said in a brief statement to the media. “Our investigators are working diligently to piece together the events that led to this tragic outcome.”

The SCDNR will be the lead agency in the investigation. Further information is expected to be released as it becomes available through official channels. Boaters are advised to exercise caution in the area as the investigation continues.
